Turning Around Chronically Failing Schools: Mission Possible?

In Los Angeles, drop-out rates are disproportionately high and concentrated in a subset of geographically dispersed schools. The effect is sobering for philanthropists: this population--middle and high school dropouts--also represents the majority of the clients at many health and social service nonprofit organizations philanthropy regularly funds.

One key issue is the impact of “probable-dropout-students”--both before and after they leave--on students who share the same classrooms. What is the effect on parents who school officials would like to bring back to public schools? What is the ultimate impact on public schools?

Presented in collaboration with the Education Funders Group, this program explores promising models for “school-turnarounds” and other educational innovations. An interactive panel discussion will be moderated by Dr. Charles Taylor Kerchner, a research professor at Claremont Graduate University and an expert on school reform efforts in Los Angeles.
