Join Black birth equity leaders and stakeholders from across California as we come together for actionable solutions and meaningful collaboration to support healthy and thriving Black families.
The 2023 California Black Birth Equity Summit will elevate and celebrate the numerous policy, program, research, and innovation advancements since the 2019 Summit. This year's Summit will be one of the largest gatherings of leaders and stakeholders in California dedicated to advancing Black birth equity and justice. The hybrid convening (virtual and in-person) will raise awareness, build capacity, and highlight sustainable strategies to eliminate racial inequities and mitigate their impact. The Summit program will feature expert dynamic keynote speakers, interactive concurrent sessions, strategic planning for policies and programs impacting Black families, meaningful dialogue, and networking opportunities.
Summit Objectives

Audience
The Summit is for stakeholders invested in improving perinatal health for Black birthing families and eliminating racial inequities in birth outcomes. The intended audience includes perinatal health clinicians, nurses, midwives, public health professionals, advocacy experts, health care leaders, community-based organizations, doulas, birthworkers, mental health professionals, health plans, philanthropists, professional organizations, researchers, lactation professionals, community advocates, health care students, and Black families.
Preliminary Program
The Summit will center the unique needs of Black families in California. It will elevate Black-led solutions and actionable strategies to advance birth equity and justice. The program promises to be dynamic, interactive, and foster community and meaningful dialogue among participants. Preliminary sessions topics include:
- Community activation and power-sharing
- Lactation support and human milk access for Black families
- Improving hospital and community partnerships and collaboration
- Policy and legislative updates
- Implementing the Medi-Cal doula benefit
- Leveraging data and storytelling to advance birth equity
- Clinical innovations to improve Black birth outcomes
- Philanthropy and Black birth equity
- Hospital Quality Improvement Toolkits
- Fatherhood involvement
- Midwifery care
- Mentorship and workforce development
The Summit is held during Black Breastfeeding Week and will celebrate Black lactation leaders.
Hybrid Format
The Summit will have a hybrid format with in-person and virtual/live stream sessions. In-person registration is limited and expected to sell out quickly. Only keynote, plenary, and select concurrent sessions will be live streamed. Summit organizers will select live stream concurrent sessions based on attendee interest and registration demand. There is no on-site registration for in-person attendees. In-person registration will end August 18th and virtual registration will end August 27th.

Refunds and Cancellation
The Summit registration fee covers both days and there is no partial registration. All registration purchases are final. Cancellations due to illness and travel concerns can be converted to a virtual registration, however, the registration fee difference will not be refunded. If you would like to transfer your registration to another person, please contact Mashariki Kudumu at mashariki@cablackbirthequitysummit.org. Summit organizers will transfer registration names only and will not facilitate financial transactions or issue refunds.

The hotel is less than a mile from The California Endowment. The discounted group rate for rooms is $182/per plus taxes. Continuing Education
This activity is sponsored by the Perinatal Advisory Council: Leadership, Advocacy and Consultation (PAC/LAC). Information on continuing education units is pending. Continuing education units are only available to attendees who attend in-person or live-stream sessions.
Certificates
Course Completion certificates will be awarded within 30 days of the Summit. Attendees must complete the Summit evaluation before receiving their certificate.
Summit Recordings Access
Summit plenary and concurrent session recordings will be made available to all registrants via the Whova app following the event and will remain available for access until February 2024. Recordings are available for educational purposes only. No continuing education credits are available for viewing recorded and on-demand sessions.
Photography and Recordings
Photography, audio, and video recording may occur at this event. By entering the event premises, you consent to interviews, photography, audio recording, video recording, and their release, publication, exhibition, or reproduction to be used for news, webcasts, promotional purposes, telecasts, advertising, inclusion on websites, or any other purpose by the UCSF Preterm Birth Initiative and the California Coalition for Black Birth Justice.
