What does accountability mean in terms of practice?

Accountability is at the heart of effective leadership, and prioritizing this concept can create space to foster a culture of improvement and success, both personally and professionally. As the sector continues to transform, so should our thinking around our giving practices and culture of leadership. Exploring Accountability is a two-part discussion that explores the various ways accountability can amplify our giving practices. 

Why should we be paying attention to this for the sector?

In this first part of our Accountability series, we are proud to feature a moderated panel discussion with leaders in the sector discussing the various ways accountability is understood and practiced in the philanthropic sector. Participants will hear real-time examples from funders and learn how building a culture of accountability invites us to reimagine and transform our giving practices.

London Jones

Senior Leader, Network Engagement & Community Building, Social Good Solutions

London Jones (she/her) is a nonprofit strategist, community facilitator, and racial equity leader from Los Angeles, California. She possesses over a decade of experience working in the nonprofit sector uplifting historically marginalized populations and supporting both internal and external organizational inclusion efforts. Motivated by a vision of an equitable and responsible society, she has dedicated her career to those very communities.

In 2020, London joined Social Good Solutions, a racial equity focused consulting firm, as its Senior Leader of Network Engagement. There she works within the firm’s initiative management portfolio, supporting the efforts of two multi-million dollar initiatives, the Black Equity Collective and Inland Empire Black Equity Initiative. Under her direction, London has cultivated the development of a network of Black-led organizations working at the collective interest of social justice. London holds a MA in Nonprofit Management from Antioch University Los Angeles, is a Certified Nonprofit Professional with the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, and a partner at Social Justice Partners LA.

Alicia Lara SCG Member

President & CEO, Community Partners

Alicia Lara is the President and CEO of Community Partners (CP), a nonprofit fiscal sponsor and intermediary based in Los Angeles. CP provides a home to innovative leaders who seek to support and uplift their communities through fiscal sponsorship and intermediary services.

Before joining Community Partners, Lara served as United Way Worldwide’s Senior Vice President of Impact. She developed and led global strategies and initiatives to drive stronger outcomes for vulnerable communities and built national and international strategic partnerships with corporate, public sector, and nonprofit leaders.

Alicia's career is a testament to her unwavering dedication to changing and improving the lives of communities in need, particularly in the public health space. During her eight-year tenure at The California Endowment, a health-related philanthropic organization, she served in various key roles, including Vice President of Programs, Director of Responsive Grant Making, and Senior Program Officer.

Alicia began her career as an advocate for the health and well-being of women of color. As a Director for California Pan-Ethnic Health Network, she cultivated and led a statewide network of advocacy experts from the Native American, Asian Pacific Islander, African American, and Latino communities to influence health care policies around services, prevention, and homelessness. She also worked closely with various health organizations to develop culturally appropriate and accessible language standards.

She currently serves on the board of CADRE, which is focused on black and brown parent organizing.

Sequoia Thompson

Coordinator, Equity, Organizational Culture, & Dialogue, SoCal Grantmakers

Sequoia supports the Vice President of Professional Learning & Family Philanthropy, by managing the development and implementation of programs and events in coordination with outside partners and other SoCalGrantmakers staff. She oversees programmatic, logistical, and administrative aspects of programs to support the Programs and Conferences team.
Sequoia is a Senior Trainer for the Los Angeles County Lesbian Bisexual and Queer Women’s Health Collaborative. She has experience facilitating interactive dialogue about intersectionality, racial healing, gender identity, and has spoken on international panels including the 2017 Opportunities for a more Inclusive Higher Education with the former Dutch Minister of Education, Jet Bussemaker at Universiteit Van Amsterdam. Sequoia incorporates storytelling to humanize the difficult discussions that individuals and society at large are not having. This pairing of storytelling and administrative decolonizing creates a powerfully impactful ambiance for transformational and sustainable change.
Sequoia is passionate about dedicating to being a part of healing the hearts of those affected by systemic anti-Black racism, challenge the institutions who overtly and/or covertly perpetuate it, and continue to challenge ourselves so we don’t perpetuate this systemic plague that separates us.
