Have you ever wondered how bias shapes our perceptions and influences our actions without us even realizing it?  

Explore how our subconscious beliefs impact our decisions every day.  

Embark on a journey of discovery with our interactive workshop designed to unravel the intricacies of bias.    

Southern California Grantmakers invites you to join Diane Burbie from The Aspire group to understand implicit bias and its stark contrast with explicit bias while exploring its profound impact on perpetuating social injustices. Through engaging exercises, live polling, and compelling video examples, participants will navigate various topics and collectively analyze current events. The course offers tools for translating the concepts into personal actions and applications. Models for interrupting bias in ourselves and others point out what we can implement immediately. Additional resources are shared that support robust reading, studying, and engagement with others.

Course Objectives 

  • Provide an understanding of implicit bias and what distinguishes it from explicit bias. 

  • Raise awareness about how implicit bias is linked to persisting social injustices. 

  • Offer steps individuals can take to interrupt this cycle of bias on personal and interpersonal levels.

Diane Burbie

Managing Principal, The Aspire Group

Diane Burbie is the owner and Managing Principal of The ASPIRE Group. Diane has more than 25 years of experience. The focus of her work is in four (4) areas of practice: 1) equity, diversity, inclusion, and access (EDIA); 2) strategic planning; 3) leadership development/coaching; and 4) conflict resolution. She is an experienced consultant, facilitator, and coach. She has facilitated processes with a myriad of audiences across the United States, US Virgin Islands, China, South Africa, England, Canada, and Jamaica. She has served in executive, management, and consultant capacities with for-profit corporations, non-profit organizations, educational institutions and government agencies.
Diane holds a BA (with honors) from Stanford University and an MBA from the University of Southern California, School of Business, with an emphasis in Human Resource Management. She has certificates in Negotiation (Harvard Law School) and Managing Multi-cultural Work Environments (CSU Fullerton). Diane is a guest lecturer at California State Universities (Los Angeles, Long Beach and Fullerton).
