The land-based tribes of Los Angeles County and beyond are undergoing a dynamic process of re-vitalization of tribal governance. At the same time, legal and moral obligations of tribal consultation require new models of government-to-government relations between public entities and the tribes. Strengthening tribal sovereignty and self-determination benefits both the tribes and the local communities, by improving the lives of tribal citizens, developing partnerships with tribal communities, and restoring right relationships to the land all Angelenos call home and its original inhabitants.
This workshop will bring together tribal leaders and community members with public officials and entities to learn about the advances made in local tribal governance and to chart paths forward of mutual respect, dialog, and cooperation.
