Matthew Vang supports the Public Policy Team to track and analyze legislation, identify opportunities for member and SCG advocacy, help plan and execute FOTH and Sacramento Day, and be a thought partner in how SCG can continue to make a meaningful impact in Southern California.
As a queer and Hmong person from the Central Valley and child to Hmong refugees, Matthew is passionate about creating pathways for underserved and marginalized communities through a social justice and systems changing lens. Prior to joining SCG, Matthew has a background in community organizing and policy analysis. He is a co-founder of and voluntary organizer with Queer Hmong Intersectional Pride (QHIP) and worked with Hmong Innovating Politics on anti-Asian racism and Southeast Asian advocacy efforts. His policy research on subjects includes K-12 education, SNAP benefits, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the state workforce. He loves getting outdoors and hiking, playing video games, paj ntaub (traditional Hmong cross stitch), or just going out for a drink in his spare time. Matthew holds a Master of Public Policy from USC’s Sol Price School of Public Policy and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from California State University, Fresno.
