Budget Request AB 2218: Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund
AB 2218 aimed to address the barriers to care that transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex (TGI) people faced. This bill would establish the Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund within the State Treasury, providing funding that would be directed to health care services like mental health programs, culture-based programs, medical services, and housing for transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex (TGI) people in California. The bill successfully passed in September 2020; in June 2021, the implementation of the bill came into fruition, as the Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund received $13 million in funding from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s budget request.
Why It Matters
SCG is committed to an equity and social justice lens, understanding that diversity, inclusion, and cultural agility are the outcomes of a more equitable and just society. Gender justice is a framework used to bring about the fair and equitable treatment of people of all genders to achieve joy, justice, and dignity. It serves people directly impacted by gender-based oppression and ensures that they have access to the resources they need to live their lives to the fullest. SCG believes that uplifting historically marginalized communities’ experiences helps bolster the cultural narrative that everyone deserves to access a fulfilling and just life. In supporting TGI and LGBTQ+ communities, the philanthropic sector can realize the dream of making transformative change for a more equitable and thriving society for ALL people.
