Event Description

Join SCG’s Education Funders group to learn about AI's potential in education, focusing on its benefits and challenges. Together, we will explore the need for AI literacy and the importance of understanding the current education landscape. Speakers will share more about AI tools in education, the importance of equipping educators, and guidelines for using them effectively. This session will provide insights from local districts, educators, and organizations working to ensure the appropriate use of AI in education and address potential concerns for equitable implementation.

About the Education Funders Group

The Education Funders Group brings philanthropic funders together quarterly to learn about issues, trends, and needs in the field of education to inform individual and collective grantmaking. Over the years, the group has explored a variety of topics, including early childhood education, after-school programming, parent engagement, blended learning, linked learning, STEM, implementation of the common core, and college access/college success.

Vicki Zubovic

Chief External Affairs Officer, Khan Academy

Vicki Zubovic has more than three decades of experience in the non-profit sector with the bulk of her time spent in education and human services. Today, Vicki leads Khan Academy's External Relations team which works with more than 500 school districts across the U.S., philanthropists globally, and Khan Academy’s strategic partners. Prior to this, she was Head of External Relations at KIPP NYC public charter schools where she led new school growth, government relations, parent engagement, as well as fundraising and public relations. She serves on the boards of Eagle Academy Foundation, New Heights Youth, Inc and AIME USA. She is a graduate of the University of Sydney and the William Alanson White Institute.

Christopher Hoang

Assistant Director, Technology Innovation and Outreach, Los Angeles County Office of Education

Dr. Christopher Hoang is an educational leader with a proven track record of success in both administrative and teaching roles. He currently serves as the Assistant Director of Technology Innovation and Outreach at the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), the nation’s largest regional preK–12 education agency. At LACOE, he oversees technology initiatives, EdTech professional development for LA County’s 80 school districts, and leads the organization’s Artificial Intelligence Task Force.

Dr Hoang is passionate about integrating technology to enhance student learning, with a focus on equity. His previous administrative experience includes roles as Assistant Principal at two schools, where his efforts directly improved graduation rates. Beyond traditional leadership roles, he champions technology integration, developing professional development programs, managing large-scale technology initiatives, and even launching a podcast dedicated to showcasing educational technology tools. He holds a doctorate in Learning Technology from Pepperdine University.

Cristal Mojica SCG Member

Senior Program Manager, Digital Equity Initiative, Michelson 20MM Foundation

Cristal is the Senior Program Manager for the Michelson Center for Public Policy and Michelson 20MM Foundation's Digital Equity initiative. The initiative builds awareness of and works to close the digital divide by advocating at the state and local level for paradigm-shifting policies - and convening cross-sectoral leaders to increase investments in solutions that put communities first and empower them to tackle barriers to broadband access.

Prior to joining Michelson, Cristal worked as a practitioner in the non-profit sector advocating for STEM higher education opportunities and career pathways for BIPOC students, with the goal of a future where the people who build and advance technology mirror the communities for whom they build.
Dr. Alice Pak

Alice Pak SCG Member

Dr. Alice Pak, Los Angeles County Office of Education

Dr. Alice Pak, a former social science teacher turned EdTech specialist, now serves as a Coordinator I in the Educational Technology & Innovation unit at Los Angeles County Office of Education. With 15 years of experience in online learning, curriculum design, and professional training, she has a passion for integrating technology into education. Her Doctorate in Learning Technologies focuses on enhancing online engagement and exploring effective use of EdTech tools. Dedicated to fostering digital literacy and creating dynamic learning experiences, Alice joined LACOE to provide professional development and support districts in effectively leveraging educational technology for impactful teaching and learning.

Sue Thotz

Director of Outreach, Common Sense Education

Sue Thotz (she/her) is the Director of Outreach for Common Sense Education and co-founder of Equity in Action CA. In 2011, Sue began working for Common Sense by providing support and training for educators and administrators on issues of digital culture and wellness. As a co-founder of Equity in Action CA, she has facilitated conferences emphasizing the importance of identity and belonging and striving to amplify marginalized voices in education technology. Sue is the winner of the 2023 CUE Making IT Happen Award. Before Common Sense, Sue was a researcher and educator. Sue holds a master's degree in public health and an undergraduate degree in zoology and chemistry.
