Event Description

We are excited to be joined by Silvia Paz and Sky Allen for our upcoming member meeting on the electoral impacts of redistricting and future directions for civic engagement in the Inland Empire — and effective practices for CBOs and funders ourselves to engage in advocacy and relationship-building with elected and other public sector officials.

In an interactive discussion moderated by Lety De Lara of the RAP Foundation, Silvia and Sky will bring their experience advocating for community voice and policies to improve the health and well-being of Inland Empire residents.

  • Reflect on the impacts of redistricting work on equitable representation for historically marginalized communities in the region,
  • Learn where the points of influence are for CBOs and grantmakers, including public sector officials, and 
  • Learn strategies and tools to support engagement and relationship building between funders and public sector officials to advocate for CBOs.

About the Inland Empire Funders Alliance

The Funders Alliance is a collaborative network of organizations with significant formal grantmaking activities in the Inland Empire region of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties that have joined together to increase communication, coordination, and collaboration. Grantmakers interested in learning more about the region for potential funding are welcome to join the meetings to connect with peers.

Silvia Paz

Founder and Executive Director, Alianza Coachella Valley

Silvia Paz is the Founder and Executive Director of Alianza Coachella Valley, a non-profit alliance of residents and non-governmental organizations working at the intersection of community engagement and policy development. Silvia is dedicated to improving the communities she calls home, and is at the forefront of the climate change issues affecting the Salton Sea region. She has served in various volunteer, appointed, and elected positions. In 2021, she was appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom to the Blue Ribbon Commission on the Extraction of Lithium, where she served as Chair, and has served on the Coachella Valley Unified School District Board of Education since 2018. Prior to founding Alianza Coachella Valley, Silvia was a high school teacher at Coachella Valley High School, a fellow at the Harvard University Planning Office, and a senior policy analyst in the office of Assemblymember V. Manuel Perez.

Sky Allen

Executive Director, Inland Empire United

Sky Allen is the Executive Director for IE United, a collective impact table of community leaders and agents in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Born, raised, and educated in the Inland Empire, Sky strives to uplift communities to advocate for what they need by challenging institutions and chipping away at structural issues at the local level. Prior to serving as Executive Director, Sky was the Program Director, where she fostered relationships with local community based organizations, statewide non-profit organizations, local government officials, and other regional stakeholders in order to bolster civic engagement and strengthen civic infrastructure. She led programs such as IE United's 2021 redistricting work and the organization's 2020 Census campaign. Sky first began serving the IE community as a fellow with the Warehouse Worker Resource Center after graduating from UC Riverside with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. She is currently a graduate student in the Master of Public Policy program at UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.
