Join us for the release of a new primer developed by AFN, Economic Security Project (ESP), Springboard To Opportunities (STO), and The Center for High Impact Philanthropy (CHIP) to educate funders about the how guaranteed income and related cash-based policies can help build a healthy and more resilient economy for us all.
The pandemic has proven that cash can not only mitigate economic precarity but also bolster family incomes and prevent poverty. Between pandemic stimulus checks, the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC), and the expanded Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the U.S. government provided nearly $1 trillion in direct, unrestricted cash payments to individuals. These efforts moved 11.7 million individuals out of poverty. New research has also highlighted guaranteed income’s impact on labor and employment, poverty, economic and gender inequalities, housing mobility, and crime.
Disparate impacts of the pandemic on communities of color, ongoing systemic inequities and a reckoning around racial equity have prompted a growing number of funders to explore ways that guaranteed income can strengthen the income, assets, health, and economic security of individuals, particularly those with lower incomes. To ensure economic security for all entails getting serious about unrestricted cash support at the federal and state levels. Different strategies exist to provide direct cash supports to those who need it most, (including tax credit proposals). Yet there are critical policy levers that can and should be implemented now to ensure those who need it most have the resources to be resilient and thrive.
Join us as we release this new primer along with national policy experts who will discuss:
· National and statewide efforts to move concepts of guaranteed income forward
· Promising policy solutions that support GI principles
· Specific strategies in which funders can invest to support GI solutions
