Earlier this month, the Trump Administration finalized its decision to broaden the definition and effect of the public-charge rule—a term used in immigration law to refer to a person who is primarily dependent on the government and inadmissible to the United States. Under the new rule, participating in federal programs such as Medicaid, food assistance, and federally subsidized housing will deny immigrants permanent residency or visas. Moreover, the finalized changes inflict significant harm on children and families, depart from longstanding immigration practice related to public charge, and place a new, extraordinary burden on the charitable sector. Unless a federal court issues an order preventing the regulations from going into effect, the new rule will take effect on October 15, 2019.  

 

Our Action

SCG is committed to making a difference in our communities; therefore, we joined 25 other philanthropic leaders to sign a letter urging state and local policymakers in California to continue supporting immigrant families.
